Cutting Home Energy Bills

At last we have seen petrol and diesel prices falling reflecting the fall in world oil prices but there is no sign of similar falls in gas and electricity prices. Here are some tips on how to reduce your bills.

If you have not switched suppliers recently you can probably find a lower cost tariff for electricity and gas. You may even be able to save money with your existing supplier if you currently pay qaurterly by switching to monthly direct debit. To check tariffs available in your area go to Energy Helpline to compare the tariffs that are available. Be sure to check duel fuel tariffs that may be lower than buying electricity and gas from different suppliers.

Cut your use of electricity by:

  • Turning off lights in rooms you are not using
  • Turn TV, computer and other appiances off at the mains rather than leaving them in standby mode
  • Switch mobile phone chargers off at the mains when not in use and don’t leave your phone charging overnight
  • Only put sufficient water in your kettle for your immediate needs
  • Try washing at a lower temperature, 30C is usually high enough
  • Dry washing outside when weather allows this rather than using the energuy guzzling dryer

Cut central heating and hot water bills by:

  • Turning the thermostat down
  • Try reducing the time the heating is switched on
  • Taking a shower rather than a bath
  • Have your boiler serviced regularly

In the longer term buy energy saving appliances look for A or AA rated kitchen appliances. If your central heating boiler is over 10 years old consider relacing it with a more efficient modern condensing boiler.

These involve major expenditure, more modest investments can pay dividends.

Replace light bulbs with energy saving ones, the price has fallen dramatically recently. And you can now get replacements for almost any type of bulb including golf ball and candle bulbs and even for halogen lamps.

The Money Jungle Shop has some great offers on energy saving products and now offers free postage for orders over £5.
